Q 1. When did Ralston leave Brookfield and where did he go?  / What was the result of the quarrel between Chips and Ralston?

Ans. Ralston left Brookfield in 1911 because he was offered the headship of one of the greater public schools. After his row with Chips, circumstances were not in his favour, so he left “to better himself”.

Q 2. Who was Ralston’s successor?
Ans. Mr. Chatteris was Ralston’s successor. He was even younger than Ralston. He was 34 years of age. He liked Chips and recognized Brookfield in him.

Ans. Mr. Chatteris was the headmaster who joined Brookfield after Mr. Ralston. He was thirty four years old and a Natural Sciences Tripos. He was brilliant, modern, friendly and sympathetic.

Ans. Chips suffered from bronchitis for nearly the whole of the winter term in 1913. So, he decided to retire at the ripe age of 65. Moreover, Ralston’s straight words had also an effect on him.

Ans. He retired in 1913. He was presented with a cheque, a writing desk and a clock on his farewell party.

Ans. Chips made a farewell speech in July, 1913. It was not a very long speech but it had many jokes and Latin quotations in it. It was made twice as long by the laughter that impeded its progress. It was full of allusions from the time Chips stayed at Brookfield.

Ans. He was a German master at Brookfield and Mr. Chips stayed at his home in 1913 when he went for a cure to Wiesbaden. He was killed on the Western Front (Germany) during the World War I.

Ans. It was a night of great celebration over the start of 20th century A.D. There was a bonfire near pavilion that caught fire and the fire brigade was called to put it out.

Q 13. What did Chips remark about the captain of the school in his farewell speech?
Ans. Chips remarked that he belonged to an exaggerating family. Chips had once thrashed his father for exaggerating one mark into seven for a Latin translation.

Ans. He thought of writing a book named "Memories of Rod and Lines" in which he wants to write about his journey through Brookfield, each and every student, teachers, his wife and his daily life.
