A big oval-shaped hall, shelves of crystal glass, vertical windows, blinds of blue colour, a long lines of tables with chairs around them, a glass cabin for the librarian, dozens of boys and girls engrossed in reading and complete silence – this is my college library.

The library has been set up in the eastern corner of my college campus to harbor the first rays of dawn and plenty of air. Unlike many other libraries, it is noise resistant. The traffic noise, students playing and shouting outside, even a moderate explosion nearby does not make a reader inside feel disturbed.

The variety of books in the library is astonishing. Contrary to many other college libraries, ours has more than that. Besides a large number of textbooks, there are reference books, magazines, novels, books on poetry and plays, dictionaries of almost all subjects and an audio-visual section. Some research these have also been added for the sake of our interest. The library statistics show that there are 40000 books and 300 audio and video-cassettes. Apart from science subjects, we can read books on history, geography, religion and general knowledge. In short, the collection does not disappoint us.

One day, the librarian spoke about the future plans, He said, “In a hi-tech age of communication, our library will go on-line. You will be able of make a contact with college libraries abroad”, This is marvelous.

Silence is noteworthy in our library, As soon you step in, a pin drop silence strikes you. The readers avoid talking. Either they whisper or they use gestures to communicate. If someone talks, blazing eyes of others taunt him so badly that he feels ashamed of talking. Besides, the floor is thickly carpeted which disallows any noise while walking. Even though a student is not in a mood of reading, the peaceful environment encourages him to read something.

The working of library is simple but accurate. A big catalogue has been arranged in alphabetical order to locate a book. This is according to the principles of library science. Secondly, now there is a computerized system that has quickened the book finding. Books are issued and deposited on library cards, which bear the photograph of a person. Hence, no unauthorized person can have the book. Thirdly, the audio-visual cassettes can be used in library only. A corner has been specified for this purpose.

In the final analysis, books are one’s best friends and a library is the only place where thousands of friends wait for one daily. A purposeful library assists us in attaining our objective. My college library is purpose-oriented and doing great service with a future vision.
