They adopt unlawful methods to become respectable in the society. They hide their real characters in the guise of wealth. Sometimes the poor try to look good by hiding their miserable condition under the veil of old and repaired clothes. This story is about a young man who conceals his poverty by wearing an overcoat. He seems to a respectable young man going out for a walk on the Mall. Everybody takes him as a well-off gentleman. The story teaches us a moral that human beings should be judged by their characters and not by their appearances.

Ans. One evening in January a well-groomed young man was walking on the Mall. It was a cold evening. He was wearing a brown overcoat. He had such a dandy look that tonga wallas and taxi drivers thought him a fare. The young man was seated on the cement bench and watched the people with interest. He bought a cigarette and smoked it with relish. Then he went into a large western music shop aimlessly and had a chat with the salesman. Then he stopped at a book stall. A few yards further ha had a glance of large Persian carpet and then moved on. He was following a young couple when a truck full of bricks crushed him. Q 12. What is the theme of the story?
Ans. The writer has inflicted a satire upon society. Sometimes a poor man disguises his poverty under false layers. He wants to be respected and honoured. But unfortunately this society judges a man on the basis of his wealth and appearance. The character has become the least important thing for getting a higher place in the society. In this story a young man tries his best to hide his abject poverty by using an overcoat which proved quite successful for him during the walk. His poverty is revealed only when his overcoat is removed. His sweater is all in holes. Layers of dirt cover his body. He could not have had a bath for at least two months.
