Eid-ul-Fitar is one of the most important festivals of the Muslims. This festival is celebrated on the first of Shawal according to Hijri Calendar. It is an occasion of great rejoicing. Actually Eid-ul-Fitar is celebrated to thank God for His mercy and kindness that has enabled us to observe the fasts of Ramzan. That if why Eid falls just after the month of Ramzan. As every Muslim is expected to give Fitrana (alms) before going out for prayers on this day, the festival is named as Eid-ul-Fitar.

As Eid-ul-Fitar is a special occasion for thanks giving and merry making, preparations for this festival start about a fortnight before the actual date. There is special shopping in the bazaars and the shops are well decorated for this purpose. Every  Muslim wants to wear his best dress on Eid.

As soon as the Eid moon is sighted, the rejoicings start. The children are very happy because they get special gifts and pocket money on this occasion. On the Eid days, every Muslim starts his preparation early in the morning. The male members of the family change their dress and go to 'Eidgah' to offer Eid prayers.

The women of the house sweep and dust the house in the best way and decorate it beautifully. Then they prepare the finest food they can afford. On Eid there is invariably a dish of 'Sevian' the traditional food prepared with vermicelli and milk.

After Eid prayers the people embrace and exchange Eid greetings with one another. When they return from the Eidgah, they also greet their family members with joy and give 'Eidi' to young ones. Friends and relatives go to one another's houses to greet. There are swings and toys for children at every corner of the street. Young people too have various kinds of happy activities.

Eid is very fine festival. It carries with it the religious sobriety mixed with rejoicings. Almost all the festivals of the Muslims have this quality. They are festivals with religious sanctity. Unlike the festivals of other religions. Muslim festivals are free from all kinds of immoral customs as drinking and gambling etc. Islam teaches us to remain within moral limits on the occasion of merry-making and festivities. Eid is the best festival of the year.
