Q.1) What arrangements were made by Navasard for the coming home of Arshak?
Answer:
Navasard was very excited when he heard the news that Arshak had come back to the village after a long period of ten years. He then decided to give a warm welcome to the young, educated Arshak. Nava said first went to the orchard to pick watermelons and figs. He took the white lamb with him as he had saved it for some special occasion. After returning home with the stuff, Navasard quickly started arranging and cleaning the things of his home so Arshak would feel good. He cleaned the home, swept the yard, terrace, and the floor by sprinkling water, laid the table with the table cloth he borrowed from the neighbor, shook out the rug, covered the couch, and put a pillow on it.

Q.2) Why was Navasard so excited at the arrival of Arshak?
Answer:
Navasard was so excited at the arrival of Arshak because he was the only son of his brother and sister-in-law. He went to Moscow for higher studies. He had come to the village after a long span of ten years so Navasard was quite enthusiastic to meet his nephew after such a long time.

Q.3) Describe the plight of Navasard after the departure of Arshak without meeting him.
Answer:
When Navasard came to know and seen by himself that Arshak was leaving the village without meeting him, he felt very dejected as he was not expecting such kind of rude and insensitive behaviour from his nephew. He felt as if the roof had come down on his head. When he was going back to his orchard, his eyes became sunken, his back seemed more stooped than ever and his unsteady gait was just that of an old man.

Q.4) What is the central idea of the story ‘The White Lamb?’ Is this theme relevant to our culture as well?
Answer:
The central idea of the story ‘The White Lamb’ is that when someone attains high status or gains wealth, fame or fortune, his attitude and behaviour usually change. The same happens in this story when Arshak after getting higher education and gaining wealth comes back to his village, he simply forgets his past life and does not give importance to his old uncle who has taken care of him just like his own son after his parents’ death.
Yes, this theme is quite relevant to our culture as well. Now and then, we witness this harsh reality that when any of our friends or relatives get higher education or good job or become wealthy, he usually forgets or even ignores his relatives or friends that are not fortunate enough to have such blessings in their lives. At this point, he gives more worth to these inanimate things than to family, relatives or friends.

Q.5) Write down the plot of the story ‘The White Lamb.’
Answer:
The plot of the story is well-organized, powerful and good as all the events take place in an integrated, coherent manner. The plot is enriched with the flavors of conflict, growth of characters and climax. It has an element of suspense and thrill as well that keep the interest level of the readers high till the end of the story.

Q.6) Is there any conflict in the story ‘The White Lamb?’ If yes, how is it resolved?
Answer:
Yes, there is a conflict in the story ‘The White Lamb.’ It arises at the moment when Navasard reaches home and comes to know that Arshak has gone to chairman’s home without any obvious reason, he becomes quite curious about that. This conflict reaches its climax when Navasard waits for Arshak till the end of the day and he doesn’t make his appearance at the old man’s house. Navasard thinks about the reasons of Arshak not coming to home but finally the conflict is resolved the next day when he is informed about the departure of Arshak without meeting him.

Q.7) How would you resolve the conflict if you were the author of ‘The White Lamb?’
Answer:
If I were the author of the story, I would resolve the conflict by bringing Arshak back to home in a happy mood. Navasard and Arshak would have nice conversation with each other after ten years, they would enjoy the shashlyk, hold talks and discussions about the past life; the time they both have spent together right there in the village in the same small house. And at the end, Arshak would give Navasard a nice, expensive present as a token of his love.

Q.8) Compare and contrast the character of Navasard and Arshak.
Answer:
Navasard is an elderly man who is kind, caring, loving, and sympathetic. He shows great love to his nephew Arshak whose parents died when he was a little child. He sold almost all of his wealth to provide financial help to Arshak so he can get higher education in Moscow. He, himself lives in his own small village home, taking care of the orchard. He misses Arshak a lot as he has not met him for the past ten years. When he comes to know about Arshak’s arrival to the village, he becomes very excited. On the contrary, Arshak is an ungrateful, thankless young man who shows arrogant attitude towards his uncle, Navasard. He spends time in the village, meeting and visiting other people there but does not think of meeting his old uncle with whose efforts he has get success in his life. Though he has become an educated, wealthy person but he forgets all moral and social ethics. He has also lost his emotional attachment to his village, childhood home and to his one and only uncle as well. He stays at the village and then silently leaves without even seeing his old benefactor.

Q.9) ‘How sharper than a serpant’s tooth it is to have thankless child!’ (Shakespeare). Critically evaluate this statement in the light of the text of lesson ‘The White Lamb.’
Answer:
No doubt, it is the harsh fact of reality that a disobedient, thankless child gives more pain to his parents due to his arrogant and disrespectful behavior than anything else. Nothing hurts the feelings of parents harder than the ungrateful child. With respect to this story, Navasard’s feelings and emotions get very badly hurt due to the insensitive, arrogant behavior of Arshak. Though Arshak knows the reality that what he is now, is just because of the financial support and parental love that Navasard has given to Arshak after his parent’s death.

Writing

A. Draw the character of Arshak. Was he justified in leaving village without meeting Navasard?

Answer:
Arshak was the second major character of the story ‘The White Lamb.’ He had gone to Moscow to receive higher education. His uncle provided him all the financial support. After getting education and working hard, he turned into a wealthy man. He showed cold, arrogant and ungrateful behaviour towards his uncle as he felt ashamed of going to his small village home and to spend time with his poor, old uncle. This behaviour of him became a source of sorrow and pain for Navasard.
No, he was not justified in leaving the village without meeting Navasard. As Navasard was the one who had not only reared him with parental love but sacrificed his wealth and property too for the better future of Arshak. He should show grateful, kind attitude towards his uncle as whatever he had achieved in his life was just due to his uncle’s sincere and selfless efforts.

B. Imagine Arshak has come along to Navasard’s house. Now, taking cues from the text of the story ‘The White Lamb,’ write their most like conversation as one page dialogue.

Answer:
Navasard: How are you, my dear son? I am so glad to see you again in my life.
Arshak: I am quite well, uncle. Just a bit tired after a long journey back to village.
Navasard: Yes, indeed its a long journey. Where would you like to sit my son?
Arshak: I think we should sit at the terrace to enjoy the cool, fresh air of my village once again after such a long time.
Navasard: How are your studies going or have you started any job?
Arshak: I have completed my studies, uncle. Now, I am the manager of one of the insurance firms of the city.
Navasard: It’s good to hear dear. Let me bring watermelon and figs that I have bring from the orchard just for you as I know you love watermelons.
Arshak: Oh, thank you uncle. So you still remember my likings and disliking.
Navasard: Yes, dear I remember everything, all the time we spent together.
Arshak: How’s the things going in village?
Navasard: Everything going well, except for the fact that I miss you a lot. After having watermelon would you like to go to the orchard to have a look at the ripened fruits there and also to the stream from where you love to drink fresh water?
Arshak: Yes, uncle. Why not? rather, I would love to see all that again.
Navasard: Let me show you one more thing Arshak?
Arshak: What is this uncle?
Navasard: It’s your childhood wooden spoon dear.
Arshak: Oh, I remember it and how you get it carved for me.
Navasard: Dear Arshak, I have taken care of all your belongings and kept all your childhood memories in my old mind and you would not believe that they are as fresh as happened a day before.
Arshak: I am so grateful to you uncle for all the love and support you have provided to me.
Navasard: No need for this, Arshak. I just want to make a request to you that do try to make a visit to village at least once in a month so I would see you more times before I breathe my last.
Arshak: Don’t say like this uncle, it really hurts me. I would definitely try to pay a visit to you as per your desire.
Navasard: Thank you, my son.
