Poem no: 1 The Rain (W.H Davies)

Explanation with reference to the context.

                         I hear leaves drinking rain;

                         I hear rich leaves on the top

                         Giving the poor beneath

                         Drop after drop;

¢Tis a sweet noise to hear

                         These green leaves drinking near.

              These lines have been taken from ²The Rain²by W.H Davies.

Context:

            The poem is a musical display of rain. Undoubtedly it is a great phenomenon of nature but the poet makes us enjoy it in a unique way. He has highlighted the musical notes hidden in it. He enjoys the sweet noise made by the leaves while drinking rain. The poem has an optimistic aspect in it. He is hopeful that it would be a lovely sight to see the sunshine.

Explanation:

        The poet says that he hears leaves drinking rain. He personifies leaves because drinking is a quality pertaining to living beings. He says that the leaves on top are rich because they directly receive every blessing of nature in the form of raindrops. Then he hears them giving drop after drop to those who are lower in order.

    He enjoys this sweet melodious noise which soothes his ears. Falling of drop after drop in an arrangement creates a light sweet melody. It gives a soothing effect to our auditory senses. Normally, noise is not something one can enjoy but the noise here is sweet and soothing not painful.²Sweet noise²has been used as oxymoron.

These lines can further be explained symbolically. In this world it is responsibility of the to help the poor. They are doing it in one way or the other. It seems very healthy and sweet to the poet. He enjoys it a lot. The stanza ends with a couplet which creates a melodious and sonorous effect on the reader.

And when the Sun comes out,

After this rain shall stop,

                            A wondrous light will fill

                            Each dark, round drop;

                            I hope the Sun shines bright;

                            It will be a lovely sight.
