Tense can be defined as that form of a Verb which shows the time and the state of an action or event.
In this tense the Verb shows that the action is mentioned as incomplete or continuous, that is, as still going on.
اردو میں پہچان: اردو میں فقرے کے آخر میں "رہا تھا، رہی تھی، ، رہے تھے" وغیرہ آتا ہے۔
مثبت فقرات: میں کھانا کھا رہاتھا۔ وہ چائے پی رہیتھی۔ وہ سکول جارہےتھے۔
منفی فقرات: میں کھانا نہیں کھارہاتھا۔ وہ چائے نہیں پیرہیتھی۔ وہ سکول نہیں جارہےتھے۔
سوالیہ فقرات: کیا میں کھانا کھارہاتھا؟ کیا وہ چائے پی رہیتھی؟ کیا وہ سکول جارہےتھے؟
منفی سوالیہ فقرات: کیا میں کھانا نہیں کھارہاتھا؟ کیا وہ چائے نہیں پی رہیتھی؟ کیا وہ سکول نہیں جاارہےتھے؟
عملی طور پر فقرات بنانے کا طریقہ: اس Tense میں امدادی فعل was اور were ہیں۔ اردو سے انگریزی بنانے کیلئے درج ذیل طریقہ ہے۔
Structure
مثبت یا سادہ فقرات/Positive or Simple Sentences
Subject(فاعل) + was/were + First form of verb+ing + Object.
He/She/It/Iواحد اسم was playing soccer.
We/You/They/ جمع اسم were playing soccer.
Negative Sentences/منفی فقرات
Subject(فاعل) + was/were + not + First form of verb+ing + Object.
He/She/It/Iواحد اسم was not playing soccer.
We/You/They/ جمع اسم were not playing soccer.
Interrogative Sentences/سوالیہ فقرات
Was/Were + Subject(فاعل) + First form of verb+ing + Object?
Was he/she/It/Iواحد اسم playing soccer?
Were we/you/they/ جمع اسم playing soccer?
Interrogative + Negative Sentences/سوالیہ + منفی فقرات
Was/Were + Subject(فاعل) + not + First form of verb+ing + Object?

Sentences starting with "Where" and "Why" are interrogative in nature
"Why" اور “Where” والے فقرات سوالیہ درج ذیل طریقے سے بنتے ہیں

Use ( استعمال)
1۔ ماضی میں کسی کام یا عمل کے جاری رہنے کیلئے۔
For work that is continuous in past time.
i. We were listening to the teachers.
ii. He was looking for the book.
2۔ پختہ عادات کیلئے۔
For concrete habits.
i. He was always disrespecting the others.
ii. I was enjoying with my friends those days.
3۔ ماضی کا کام جو دوسرے کام پر اثر انداز ہو۔
For past work that has an effect on another work.
i. When the bell rang, I was having a bath.
ii. When I saw her, she was dying her hair.
4۔ شک و شبہ کے اظہار کیلئے۔
For stating doubts.
i. I was watching TV, when she called.
ii. When were you talking to her in the party?
5۔ دو کاموں کو بیک وقت بیان کرنے کیلئے مگر دونوں کام متوازی ہونگے۔
For stating two works that are happening concurrently.
i. I was studying, while she was making dinner.
ii. While Adil was reading, Ali was playing.

1. I was knocking at the door.
میں دروازہ کھٹکٹھا رہا تھا۔
2. We were thanking our guests.
ہم اپنے مہمانوں کا شکریہ ادا کر رہے تھے۔
3. I was solving the sum.
میں سوال حل کر رہا تھا۔
4. The children were not spoiling their clothes.
بچے اپنے کپڑے خراب نہیں کر رہے تھے۔
5. A poor girl was not weeping.
ایک غریب لڑکی رو نہیں رہی تھی۔
6. He was not wasting his time.
وہ اپنا وقت ضائع نہیں کر رہا تھا۔
7. Was the peon ringing the bell?
کیا چپڑسی گھنٹی بجا رہا تھا؟
8. Were we climbing down the tree?
کیا ہم اس درخت سے اتر رہے تھے؟
