Answer: The central idea of the essay is quite evident from its title ‘The Importance of Family.’ The whole essay focuses on this aspect. Keen believes that family is the first line of defence against all the ills of the society.
Q.2) Analyze any two paragraphs of the essay ‘The Importance of Family’ and classify the sentences that support the main idea under the headings of definition, example, cause and effect, facts and opinions.
Answer: Basically all the paragraphs of the essay ‘The Importance of Family’ have the essence of coherence. Each and every paragraph of this essay has the topic sentence and the supporting details. Let’s take the example of the first paragraph, the topic sentence states that the family is the first target of tyrants and utopians. The rest of the sentences are supportive to the topic sentence. Similarly, in the next paragraphs, the author tries to prove that family is the natural school of love. Keen says that men and women should come together and share equal responsibilities.
Answer: According to Keen, the ‘only revolution’ that will heal the ills of our society is the role of men and women that they can play together. They are the ones who can place the creation of rich family life in the center of horizon of our values. This only revolution will help in binding the family members once again with the strong thread of love, care, affection, and togetherness.
Answer: The thesis of the essay ‘The Importance of Family’ is the stated one. Keen clearly explains the importance of family, strong family relationships, the equal responsibility of men and women for nurturing social, cultural, moral, and ethical values. Arguments, examples, opinions, and evidences are used elaborately by the writer to explain his point of view in length to the readers and these supports the thesis of the essay as well.
Answer: The point of the 4th paragraph is that once the term economics meant ‘the art of managing household’. This terminology is changed under the influence of industrial revolution when the word economics stands for ‘the system of production, distribution, and consumption of commodities.’ The changed terminology casts a negative impact on the family system and it helps in the degradation of the dignity of the home. The contents of this paragraph are the clear reflection of the thesis of the essay as it is all about importance of family.
Q.6) Keen says, “We heal ourselves by learning to give to our children what we did not receive.” What does he mean? Do you agree?
Answer: I totally agree with Keen’s point of view that ‘We heal ourselves by learning to give to our children what we did not receive.’ Here, Keen wants to say that if we ourselves were the unfortunate ones to get the loving father or the perfect family system, we should try to become a good father or develop strong family relationships. In this way, we can heal all our past sorrows and pains. Hence, we should try to give to our children what we have longed for throughout our lives.
Writing
A. Keen believes that “the family is the first line of defense against dehumanization and misplaced loyalty.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement. Write about your reaction.
Answer:
Yes, I agree with what Keen believes that “the family is the first line of defence against dehumanization and misplaced loyalty.” It is true, as within the premises of a home, a family may enjoy the freedom to think, speak, and worship according to their will. Many thinkers or social activists try to give rise to the aspect of dehumanization and misplaced loyalty and they have done a great deal in promoting their desire. Due to such elements, people are pushed silently but ruthlessly towards a new economic order where they give more importance to their economic development as compared to family life. In this case, according to Keen “efficiency is preferred above compassion, and devotion to the competitive goals of the corporation over loyalty to family. ”
B. An extended family, consisting of parents like father, mother, and their children, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins, all living in the same household, is on decline. The extended families are gradually shrinking into a nuclear family system, consisting of parents and their children. Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper on the causes of decline of extended family and its effects on the social, cultural and moral of our young generation.

The Editor,
Daily Dawn,
Peshawar.
Sir,
Through your esteemed newspaper, I want to draw the attention of the people towards one of the burning issues of the society i.e. the causes of the decline of extended family and its effects on the social, cultural and moral of our young generation.
First of all, we should know about the difference between the extended and nuclear family systems. Extended family means a family compromising of grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins living together under one roof. On the other hand, a nuclear family means a simple, small family including parents and their children.
In the past, people preferred to have an extended family system due to the benefits it offers. Later, due to various reasons, extended family is replaced by the nuclear family. One of the obvious reasons is the lack of tolerance in the people of present times. Secondly, the factor of privacy plays important role in this respect. People usually do not want anyone else to interfere in their matters whether they are their grandparents or uncles giving them advice on various issues. In the third place, economic instability or financial pressure promotes the concept of the nuclear family system. Due to the continuous rise in various commodities, people have fewer resources to feed a large family so they prefer to live alone with fewer family members.
As we have learned about the causes of the decline of extended family, we should know what we have lost with it. Yes, we in general, have lost the love, care, and affectionate ways with which the grandparents used to teach their grandchildren about cultural and ethical values, as, in our nuclear family system, grandparents are no more present. Another dilemma is that grandparents are not at our home and our parents too, as both father and mother have to do the job to run the family on smooth economic grounds and to meet the ever-increasing demands of education and to enjoy a good status in the so-called materialistic society. Hence, no one is there to teach the young ones about their social, cultural, and moral values. Due to this reason, we can see a sharp decline in the moral and ethical etiquette of the young generation, and this matters a lot when comes to the question of civilized society.
Being a responsible citizen, I want to make a humble request to all the members of society to give a second thought to the pros and cons of extended and nuclear family systems. Extended families due have certain limitations but they have more benefits to offer. If this is not possible, then mothers should remain at home for the better brought up of their children according to Islamic teachings and cultural norms and values. No doubt, this is the only way we can pave a smooth way for our generation to tread on the path that is culturally, morally, and socially rich.
Thanking You.
Yours Sincerely,
X.Y.Z.
