“Television enables you to be entertained in your home by people you wouldn’t have in your home”.

An appeal to the eye is always greater than an appeal to the ear. Television is one of the greatest inventions of our age. It is derived from a Latin word meaning “to see from a distance.” It has been a powerful means of propaganda. It has got a wide spread popularity since its origin. Nowadays, it has become an indispensable part of our life. In free time, everyone likes to sir around it for entertainment and information. In this age of tension and depression, the role of television has become very critical. It eases one’s tensions and makes one forget one’s worries for the time being.

Television is of immense importance in this modern world. It is the best source of domestic recreation. We can enjoy the dramas, live concerts, movies, games and matches played fields by sitting in our room. Moreover, there are special programmes telecast for every age and group of people they are children or housewives, farmers or soldiers, professional men or women. Everyone has got a fair share of his own in the programmes

Television is undoubtedly a reliable source of information. Sitting in our own rooms, we can learn and watch the occurrences happenings at thousands of miles away. It gives information about the events unfolding in political, social, scientific, economic and industrial worlds with in depth analysis.
Moreover, television has rendered a useful service in the fields of education and research. It has also become a useful mean of instruction in science and technology. Medical students can watch complicated operations live from the operation theatres. Programmes relating to every department of education and life are displayed for the guidance and assistance of the people. Farmers are informed about the latest fertilizers, new seeds, processes to preserve fruit and vegetables, and methods of rapid growth of crops. Announcements are made to warn people against and critical situation or imminent danger. So we can say that television has become an indispensible part of human life because it covers all those areas that interest and govern human life and behavior.

Television has its disadvantages too. The attractive and glamorous life of artists and the allurement of romance shown in certain plays involve people in daydreaming. They want to become rich and attractive overnight. They are not ready to face and fight the bitter realities of today’s life. It makes us either victims of laziness and inertia or involves us in a blind race for money and fame because it is often said that “Television is the chewing gum for eyes”. The situation has grown from bad to worse with the arrival of Cable. The entire nation has dived downward into the ocean of moral degradation. People taking part in physical activities and pondering over the mysteries of the universe are no where to be seen. People do not like studying books: as much of their time is spent in watching different television programmes.

The above mentioned situation is worsened by the misleading advertisements. People are persuaded to but more and more new things and it has resulted in creating a buying-lust among them. The others who cannot afford to buy such costly things become victims of inferiority complex. This situation has resulted in widening the gap between the poor and the rich.

On the whole, we can say that television is a great invention of men. Its dangers and disadvantages can be controlled by adopting better policies not only by the authorities but by the people themselves. People should keep in mind that excess of everything is bad. If it is used with caution and care, it can become a useful tool of education, information and entertainment.

“The mind is its own place, and in itself

Can make a heaven of hell; hell of heaven.” (Milton)
